About Us

Buckets of rain outside. The most amount of water one can imagine being dumped at one time from the sky. This is what happens in Costa Rica from time to time and increasingly frequently now that the dry season is coming to an end. The plants like it, need it, especially my newly transplanted lemongrass that is clearly not happy. But for me, it’s unsettling more than anything. Thus, I haven’t worked up the boldness to venture on my bike (new fenders installed yesterday, just in time) down to the school to do some work. Here I am still in the house, having a second or third cup of coffee and trying to figure out an adequate way to start this thing called a blog. Hmmm, I’m stumped.

Well then, without further ado:

Welcome to the Escuela Camino Claro: Community Education Center Blog!

Heavy rains are hardly the biggest news for ECC… if that were the case none of us would be here. This blog is intended to offer an opportunity for those interested to keep up with the challenges, accomplishments, activities, and overall experiences of the community education center and their teachers through a more personal perspective.

Why is that worth reading?

Well, I can assure you that lots of interesting things happen when you live in an isolated beach village in rural Costa Rica, start a school without any prior business experience, and work with a multicultural community teaching all ages and all subjects! Our lives, most of the time, are quite exciting. They are, at least, to us, and maybe for you too. So keep checking in on us; you’re supporting us, whether you know it or not, just by reading our musings, ramblings and general updates. The rain has let up a bit, so I must go now. I have to check something off my list today: the wheelbarrow awaits!

Our Mission

Escuela Camino Claro (ECC) is a non-profit community education in Pavones, Costa Rica. ECC provides high quality English education, including ESL, English Immersion, and Home School classes, as well as computer/internet literacy classes to the low-income families of Pavones, Costa Rica. ECC is dedicated to developing sustainable programs which will promote environmental awareness as well as generate sources of income within the Pavones and Guaymi Indigenous Reservation micro-economies.

Our Vision

Our vision is that each individual is given the tools to stimulate self-development so that they may ensure a successful and productive life for themselves and future generations. We believe all people should have equal access to resources, specifically within a nation confronted with the affects of globalization and foreign investment. Through ECC’s programs to build a strong and empowered community, people will coexist in a mutually beneficial relationship within Pavones’ unique and diverse community.
