About Pavones

Surfing in Pavones Costa Rica Located in the Gulfo Dulce on the Pacific coast of Southern Costa Rica, Pavones is truly a magical place. It is quite literally "the town at the end of the road" where a diverse community coexists and adventurous travelers are charmed by the aesthetic beauty. Situated next to the Rio Claro, at the base of the mountainous Guaymi indigenous reserve, and in front of the world-class left-hand surf break, Pavones' landscape is awe- inspiring. As a result of foreign interest and tourism, Costa Rica has developed at an incredible rate, particularly within the last 20 years. Regardless, Pavones is lucky to have maintained its slow development; electricity was installed in Pavones in 1995 while the arrival of phone lines and internet is as recent as 2007.

Pavones is an internationally known surf destination and the waves are often filled with a mix of locals, foreign residents, and tourists. Many come to Pavones to experience its rich biodiversity (where sightings of several species of monkeys, scarlet macaws and sloths are a daily event) and experience outdoor activities (such as hiking, snorkeling, deep sea fishing, horseback riding, bird-watching, and kayaking). Many also come here in search of an alternative lifestyle outside the hustle and bustle of urban society.
